The Use of Ozempic, Wegovy (Semaglutide) and Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) in Weight Loss

The HOTTEST topic in the weight loss field now are the injectable GLP-1’s. These are called Glucagon-like Peptide-1. The brand names for the Nova Nordisc Company are Ozempic nd Wegovy, and are in the form of “Injectable Pens”.

The generic name for  Ozempic and Wegovy is Semaglutide.  Ozempic is FDA approved only for Type II Diabetes. Wegovy is FDA approved for weight loss. For weight loss, the patient must qualify with BMI of 27 or more and at least one significant medical problem, ie: Diabetes type II, Hypertension, Hypercholesterolemia.  Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) is only approved for Type II Diabetes, it is currently awaiting approval for weight loss with retrictions.

The mechanism of action of these injectables are they are hormones that work on your brain to regulate your appetite, and slow down digestion in your intestines to keep you full longer.

Is The Compounded Form of Semaglutide, FDA Approved For Human Use?

No. Many of the compounded forms are Semaglutide Sodium, which IS NOT FDA approved for human use and there is no idea where they are sourced from, nor what the ingredients are, or if it is effective.

There have been many shortages recently of these brand name medications, which has lead to compounding pharmacies producing non-FDA approved injectables, making false claims that they are the same.

At present there are also numerous unscrupulous medspas, physicians, social media, and online advertisements for the compounded form of these “Semaglutide” or “Tirzepatide” shots, and are calling them “FDA Approved”. They are NOT FDA approved!!!

Dr. Fisher advises his patients to only use BRAND NAME “Wegovy” in the form of a “dial up pen”!!  If you are receiving a “bottle” labeled “Semaglutide”, or “Tirzepatide” and insulin syringes, these are illegal and are NOT FDA APPROVED!! The companies that produce the name brand medications, have a patent on the formula, therefore no generic versions are allowed to be produced.  Please DO NOT take them at all costs!!!

To be approved for Wegovy, you need to qualify with a BMI of over 27 and a medical problem such as Diabetes type II, Hypertension, Hypercholesterolemia.  Again, this is a “dial up pen”!

There are numerous side effects to these injectables such as nausea, vomiting, stomach and intestinal pain, constipation (severe) sometimes leading to bowel obstruction and surgery!  Also, pancreatitis, a severe and painful, often deadly condition is possible, along with possible thyroid cancer (Medullary Thyroid Cancer).  Also, if these injectables are stopped, they are hormones and the patient will regain the weight lost!!

In reference to “Tirzepatide”, generic compounded “Mounjaro”, it is not yet approved for weight loss, it is only approved for Type II Diabetes!

Dr. Fisher’s Position on Compounded Semaglutide

Dr. Fisher is a member of The Obesity Medicine Association, the premier obesity organization for physicians. He just attended a 4 day conference in New York and they produced a statement sent to all of their physician members. In this statement they are discouraging the use of compounded Semaglutide/Tirzepatide, because none are FDA approved and we do not know their source!!

If our patients are seeking to obtain these “compounded” forms of “Semaglutise and Tirzepatide”, please note they are taking their health in their own hands. Currently a number of these compounding pharmacies are being “shut down”, closed by the FDA in various states as they are producing non-FDA approved products, with no known source!!  The FDA has issued a warning about the use of compounded semaglutide.
